In 1991, after 6 years of experience developing diverse Regional Events, Wagner Cornejo turned around his career and began working at Jotabequ as an Account Executive. Three years later, he went on to become Regional Account Supervisor and began working for international brands with extensive operations in Central America and the Caribbean.
Post this, he took on the challenge to create a new company based on the existing model of Grey London. This new challenge emerged from the market’s need to start generating contact between the brand and the consumer through nontraditional structural methods.
In order to take on that challenge, he received training in Grey London and Grey Japan. With a new business model in hands, he began to create new ways to generate relationships between the brand and the consumer.
Subsequently, the company went on to create content for brands in Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, South America and Central America.
Towards the end of the 2009, Wagner assumed Grupo Jotabequ CEO position.
Throughout his career, Wagner has the pleasure to have worked with great companies such as GSK, Procter & Gamble, Mars, British American Tobacco, Astra Zeneca, Roche, Coca-Cola, Toyota, Hyundai, Novartis, Sony Play Station, Diageo, Heineken, 3M, Kraft General Foods, Dos Pinos, Cervecería Costa Rica, Group Bruma, Banco de Costa Rica, Banco Nacional de Costa Rica, Group Nacion, Pepsi Co.
Wagner was born in San José Costa Rica and has a Marketing MBA.
I have been able to work in lots of projects: From developing the first positioned university in Costa Rica (Ulatina), the first Korean electronics respectful brand (Goldstar -now LG-), brand position a Retail Store (Cemaco), sell lots of hamburgers while developing an experience (McDonald's), reposition a big brand of beer (Imperial), build tough perceptions on a car (Toyota), launch banks (Lyon, Nacional and Costa Rica), sell lottery (National Lottery, Chances, Tiempos and Instantánea), build empathy (Xenical), launch a new brand of water and fruit drinks (Cristal and Tropical), keep and optician on high levels of awareness (ópticas Visión), launch a new beer for a younger market (Rock Ice); to raise money for social programs (Hospicio de Huérfanos, Teletón, Junta de Protección Social, Patronato Nacional de la Infancia, Ministry of Health), sell ideas for a better way of living (Candidacies of Mr. Abel Pacheco, Mr. óscar Arias and Mrs. Laura Chinchilla -the three of them became presidents of the Republic of Costa Rica-), conscious and awareness campaigns for Ministry of the Presidency to dissolve strikes, Ministry of Finance to raise tax culture, and many more.
Participating at award shows has been also a thrilling ride. I’ve enjoyed the excitement of choosing the work, waiting for a result and celebrating recognition. Special have been both Festival Volcán and Pregonero de Bronce, which I treasure fondly since they represent the best of the best in my beloved country. Awesome has been the awards at New York Festivals and more so, Cannes Lions, in which I’ve had finalists and Silvers... still waiting for the Gold.
Key for this experience has been jotabequ, the Advertising Agency that has honoured me with a fragment of my name, and to which I am a partner. Jotabequ is the playground for most of my professional experience, and has allowed me not only work in great projects but also to develop a modern and practical way of communicating to our markets.
Graduated in Advertising at Universidad Latina de Costa Rica, completed an internship in DDB Chile, and today carries more than 10 years of experience. On April 2015, he took on the role as Chief Creative Officer at J. Walter Thompson Costa Rica, and after just one year, managed to place the agency as the ‘5th Most Innovative Agency Worldwide’, according to the Cannes Lions Report 2016. His work became part of the Directory Big Won Rankings' Top Ten, and he’s been awarded in several festivals such as Cannes Lions (including 3 Gold Lions), D&AD (including the first and only Yellow Pencil for his country), One Show, LIA Awards, New York Festivals, El Sol, El Ojo de Iberoamérica, and in his parallel work, as a Planner who was also recognized at Effie LATAM. Currently, he works as General Creative Director at Jotabequ Grey and keeps evaluating burgers in his Facebook fan page ‘El Comehamburguesas’. Bon appétit!
Duncan Campbell studied fine arts at UACA University in Costa Rica.
In 1996, he started his career as a designer working with advertising agencies like Bates Worldwide, DDB, Halsband, Publimark and finally, Jotabequ GREY.
From Jr. Designer to Head of Art, he’s been through many stages in his career, doing his best to work with people and growing teams, and of course, building better designers by coaching them every day.
Wining awards for him is an important agency objective, but awards can only be won by team effort! He brings this learning from the several awards he’s won in national and regional advertising festivals.
His most well-known view on Design is - "A design without an idea is an empty design, Don't do it!"
Ana Virginia Chavarría Chaves, Business Manager at Jotabequ Grey in Costa Rica, is a former journalist, a marketer by profession, and a lover of communication in all its expressions who came by chance to an advertising agency—and now nobody can take her out. She has been at Jotabequ Grey since 2015.
With more than 20 years of experience in communications and marketing, she promotes teamwork, is a professional, proactive leader, and is creative, responsible, and enterprising. She enjoys challenges and constant learning.
With a Master's Degree in Marketing and Communication Management from Vértice Business School in Málaga, Spain, and a bachelor's in Advertising from Universidad Latina de Costa Rica, Professor María José Chaves has more than 15 years of experience in the advertising industry! Having worked with the big names in advertising in the country like McCann Erickson, JWT and Jotabequ, she’s currently the Business Director of Jotabequ GREY.
